Opening in 1985 and named Independent Retailer of the Year by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) in 1996, Penny Lane has gone through some changes over the years, going from being the largest independent chain in Los Angeles to the single current location in Upland, California. A true mom-and-pop operation, Penny Lane is still run by the original owner. Locations over the years have included Venice Beach, Westwood Village, Third Street Promenade Santa Monica, three stores in Pasadena, Torrance, Burbank Village, Belmont Shore in Long Beach, plus franchises in downtown Whittier and Sacramento.
Current products include CDs, LPs, 45s, cassette tapes, DVDs, Blu-Ray, posters, books, plus other various lifestyle items. We also sell on Discogs, where we have maintained a 100% positive customer feedback rating.
Walk-in customers are welcome. In addition, other quality record vendors are invited to offer their wares via consignment.
Employees over the years have consisted of a who's who of record store legends, many of whom remained for a decade or longer, and whose motivation was never financial. Why do we do it? Good question - it must be something in our blood. When you visit, we'll try not to get any on you.

We've received inquiries regarding the LP covers that were previously on our website, which have since been replaced by titles that are more indicative of our store stock, and represent to a greater degree what we are seeking to purchase used. Many of the LP covers that were formerly featured on our website have passed through our stores over the years, but the images were obtained from a site called LP Cover Lover that lovingly compiles the weird and wonderful world of record covers from the golden age of LPs.
